WSURF Case 326

Centrifugal Blood Separator

This patented invention is a device that can separate mixtures containing cellular components or those having a large density difference.

The device employs a rotating chamber that contains various smalller chambers which aid in the separation. The device is designed to remove the lighter components of the mixture while the device is spinning. The heavy components or cells must be removed once the device has stopped spinning. Once the chamber has been cleared, it can be used again.

Applications & Advantages

The CBS system is a continuous plasma separator module, which uses centrifugal force and a patent protected vesicle to achieve plasma separation. It has demonstrated the capability to separate 1-mL of whole blood in less than 30 seconds. The resulting plasma is aspirated on a continuous basis and delivered to the next stage of the analytical process. Clean out is accomplished dynamically. Systems that require greater capacity can achieve higher throughput by joining several CBS modules together.
