WSURF Case 545

Serotonin Agents for Cancer Treatment

Summary

Although serotonin is characterized as a neurotransmitter, serotonin transporters have been found in many non-neural cells, including cancer cells. Its function in non-neural cells has not been fully elucidated. However, the widespread distribution of transporters suggests that the effect of serotonergic drugs are pleiotropic and can be considered unpredictable. Within this theme, a novel type of treatment for melanoma utilizing the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine (Prozac) has been discovered by researchers at Washington State University.

Applications & Advantages
  • Inhibits growth in vitro at physiological concentrations
  • Decreases frequency of metastatic foci
  • Prevents weight los and loss in body fat (cachexia).
  • Proven physiological properties- No gross toxicity
