WSURF Case 569

Low-Density Wood Plastic Composites

Summary

WSU researchers have developed low-density cellular wood-plastic composites and a novel extrusion process for making them.

This technology involves extruded wood-plastic composites comprised of soft or hard wood flour and a thermoplastic resin, produced by the introduction of a gas or air at low pressure during the extrusion process.

Applications

Wood-plastic composites are widely used in structural and non-structural residential building products. For building product applications, extruded wood plastic composite materials are used in door, window, and decking products for their durability and moisture resistance.

IP Status

This technology has US and international patents pending and is available for licensing.
